How To Travel To Antarctica

I love traveling to Antarctica, even though I have done it once, it was the best trip of my life. There really is no question, no trip will ever match it ever again. Here is my little guide to enjoying and planning how to travel to Antarctica.

When is the best time to go?

The summer season is from November to March, but aside from this, it just isn’t possible to travel there due to the constant darkness and harsh conditions in winter. Also the pack ice becomes extremely thick and ships are not able to break through this. There would also be nothing to see during the winter time as the wildlife moves to warmer climates and then comes back again during the summertime.

The middle of the summer is the time when Antarctica experiences the most daylight and you can expect 20 or more hours of this, which is pretty much unbelievable. So if you want to be constantly seeing things, this is exactly the time. The best time will all depend on what you want to see, for example February and March are great times to visit to see whales. They are not really visible at any other times. Also, the middle to late season is when a ship can explore the most as the ice has broken up a lot by this point.

How to get there

There are a number of cruise ships that depart from Argentina, from the city of Ushuaia. These ships cross the Drake Passage and make their first stop at the South Shetland Islands, which have a unique history of their own. These ships all vary in size, some have fewer than 50 passengers and other have space for hundreds of passengers!

How long to go for

My personal preference is to go for as long as possible, because it is not likely to be a trip that you make twice, so you might as well get the most from it. Cruises go from 10 days to 30 days, but I think the shorter ones are not worth it because it does take some days to go from Argentina to Antarctica and then back again.

How much does it cost?

Antarctica is not a budget travel destination, let’s make that clear. The costs are going to run into the thousands, but it will all depend on the length of your trip and the things that you will get to see. The best thing to do is to look around to get the best price and trip for your budget. It may not be cheap, but it certainly is worth it!

Things to see

Going on a cruise in Antarctica of course means seeing some of the most stunning scenery that you are likely to experience in your entire life. I think that the most interesting to see is definitely the landscape, especially with the gargantuan icebergs, glaciers and endless fields of ice as far as the eye can see. I love the fact that it is so untouched and the only real signs of life are the various species of birds, penguins, whales and seals.

Hopefully these tips have helped you to know more about how to travel to Antarctica, but most of all, enjoy this amazing place!
