Rome

Depending on your personal preferences, Rome is home to any number of potential bucket list attractions. In fact, considering just how special the Eternal City is, you might simply consider paying it a visit as one of your 50 things to do before you die.

Highlights include the Roman Colosseum; the Vatican City, home to Michelangelo’s stunning ceiling art; and the Trevi Fountain, where dropping a coin is said to ensure you’ll one day return to the Italian capital.

Venice

Surely one of the most common bucket list items, riding a gondola along one of Venice’s famous canals is a must-do on any visit to the City of Water.

Other potential bucket list candidates include attending a masked ball as part of the city’s legendary Carnevale celebrations or catching the Venice Film Festival, but you’ll have to wait until next year if these are on your list as 2013’s editions have been and gone.

Barcelona

Any self-respecting football fan will have attending a match at the cavernous Camp Nou on their list of to dos in life. While the Barcelona team will most likely still be playing in 50 years time, now is a great time to see the team in action with both Messi and Neymar in the squad.

For the ultimate experience, wait until Real Madrid are in town. The El Clasico games are the most fiercely contested in Spain and Real’s stellar line-up of Galacticos features both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale this year.

Orlando

Whether you’re a real kid or just a big kid, Orlando’s theme parks make for a special holiday experience. Enjoy the magic of Disney World, experience the thrills of the rollercoasters and have a splashing good time at the water parks.

Cape Canaveral is also close by, so if seeing a space rocket blast skywards is on your bucket list, try to coincide your visit with a launch. Nasa publishes a list of upcoming lift-offs.

Sharm El Sheikh

If you dream of diving beneath the waves to discover a hidden world of colour, there’s no better place to do so than the Red Sea, which has warm, clear water, diverse marine life and plenty of dive schools willing to take you there.

Maldives

If you’ve always dreamt of walking on a white-sand beach lapped by azure blue seas and backed by palm trees, then the Maldives is the destination for you. The ultimate luxury retreat, you can dine on private islands, sleep above the water and scuba dive with tropical fish – bliss.

Verona

A must-visit city for literature buffs, Verona is, of course, where Shakespeare set his most famous play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Visitors can stand beneath Juliet’s balcony and check out the house where Romeo lived.
